The Latest Lovin' Spoonful News:

New tour dates have been added with more to come!

Can we still call it Rock and Roll?

Well the Lovin’ Spoonful is almost half way through 2011 and we are having a great year. We ended last year in Germany performing live on the Chartoppers TV show in Cologne for an world wide audience of 15 million people. We started the new year in a blizzard in January on a 7 stop tour throughout the Northeast and Canada. For the tour we had the indomitable Tom Curiale as tour manager and driver. He got us through two blizzards in a Dodge Sprinter van and then he was off to play drums for Rick Derringer. Thanks Tom. From Maine to California and several stops in Florida, not bad for a band celebrating it’s 46th year on the road and it still only May. Last week we were at Hershey Park, PA in the amphitheater and they put us up at the historic Hershey Hotel. Quite a fascinating hotel and amusement park, a tribute to how popular chocolate is. In Florida we played a sold out show in Mt Dora for their arts festival in February. A beautiful Old Florida town on the lake and later in April stops in Miami (Magic City Casino) with 70’s superstars, America, was a great show and the we got up on stage with Gerry and Dewey and the band for a grand finale. Then on to Naples and Lakeland for concerts at the Naples Philharmonic and in Lakeland at the historic Polk Theater where Elvis himself had performed there many years ago.

We are going to take the month of June off and catch our breath before July gets here and 7 shows in that month. The band is very glad to be performing so often and much thanks has to go to our agent Steve Peck and the whole crew at Skyline Artists. Steve was made a vice president there earlier this year and it looks like the move was a good for him and the band.
Everybody in the Spoonful is also busy with personal projects and as this is written Mike reports that his move to Red Wing, Minnesota has gone very well. He and wife Lauri bought a nice home there and moved this spring. Mike continues to commute back to Chicago on occasion to work at Jim Petricks World Stage Studios with several artists and Grammy Award winning producer Larry Milas. He also is a counselor and advisor to the Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp there.

Jerry is keeping busy with his recording studio Willow Sound in Harrison, Arkansas working with local and visiting artists . Also every Thursday and Saturday nights that he is not on the road with the Spoonful, he is performing as a solo artist at the Grand Central Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas in the Grand Taverne 37 N. Main St. and on Friday nights at Stonehouse 89 S. Main St. in Eureka Springs.

Soon after the Spoonful stopped touring in 1968 Joe starred on Broadway in Hair with the original cast, replacing Jim Rado who was one of the creators of the show. Now 40 some years later many members of the original cast get together every 18 months or so and do a tribute to Hair for the benefit of Doctors without Borders and Mercy Corp and as Joe says he gets to play someone 50 years younger than himself. He also is finishing up a one man show and album to be performed this winter at The Workshop Theater in New York City. Joe lives with his lovely wife Kim in Greenwich Village. Joe’s daughter Yancy Butler also recently appeared in an episode of the CBS television show, The Mentalist.

Phil, our esteemed guitarist and vocalist is also the owner of GuitarSmiths a supersweet music and stringed instrument store in Harrison, Arkansas. With all the storms in his area lately, he said not much else going on but he is working on some new music and running the store all the while watching the rain come down.

Steve is finally settled in to his new home in St. Augustine, Fl. He spent some of the best years as a youngster there and is glad to be back again. He recently attended the 50th anniversary reunion of his class at St Joseph’s Academy in St. Augustine with wife Lena and had a great time. He also is finally able to put in some quality time on his book project, which had been put on hold due to the move and frequent touring. He also is planning to release an album of new music, his first as a solo artist and as a companion to the book. They both should be done by this time next year. Steve’s hobbies are sailing and motor sports and in the last few months he has spent a week at Sebring, Fl camping at the site and attending the 12 hour sports car endurance race there in March. Last month he and his brother Mike and friend Bruce Burrows sailed Mike’s Santana 23 in the annual Key Largo race. They did pretty well Steve reports. Steve also mentioned that he has become his own webmaster and has built a new web site (FlashPoint) and is looking for comments. It is still located at www.steveboone.net.
The Lovin’ Spoonful site is also asking fans what else they might like to see for sale in our web store: www.lovinspoonful.com and click on shop. Send in your suggestions to: spoonmailman@bellsouth.net.

Now it is on to the second half of the year and beginning in July we get busy again. Sometimes it is hard to imagine that we have been playing music for a living for nearly 50 years now. If it wasn’t for the fans coming out and supporting the shows we would not have been able to do it this long. So one great big thank you to all of our fans out there and we hope to see you out there again when The Lovin’ Spoonful plays a concert near you!!!
